WELCOME TO WAT SAKET RAJAVARAMAHAVIHARA
Wat Saket is a very important monastery in Thailand's modern history According to the Royal Chronicle of Rattanakosin Era,King Rama1,founder of the Royal House of Chakri and builder of Thailand's new capital,Bangkok,had performed The Royal bathing ritual at Wat Saket after which he officially established himself the Kingdom's new ruler.Since then,Wat Saket-thanks to its historical significance-has continued to receive Royal sponsorship and support,which include the construction of all religiouse buildings and the monks living quarters as well as the periodical restoration projects.Wat Saket has also been promoted by Royal docree as a second-rank Royal monastery.
THE GOLDEN MOUNT
The construction of the GOLDEN MOUNT took place under the decree and sponsorship of King Rama3 of the Royal House of Chakri and completed in the reign of King Rama4.It was 100meters high with around 500meters in dia meter. King Rama5 presided over the enshrining ceremony of the Buddha's relics brought from the Grand Palace on the stupa atop the Golden Mount.The King paid a visit to the Golden Mount again in 1899 to deposit the Buddha's rerlics the Kingdom had received as gift from the Government of INDIA.His majesty King Bhumibol attended a ceremony of depositing a Buddha's relic at the Golden Mount Chedi for the third time
PHRA UBOSOTHis not only the main venue for all religious functions but also the repository of traditional Buddhist arts.It is surrounded on 4 sides by low walls called Kampaeng Kaew,within which such beautiful structures as stupas,porticos and go puras can be found.The Assembly Hall itself-built in the reign of King Rama1.-was impressively decorated with mural painings depicting the scenes in the Buddha's life.In the middle of the Hall sits majestically a large presiding Buddha Image in meditaltion posture.
PHRA VIHARNis located in the east of the Golden Mount.It is where enshrined.The frist was Phra Attharos,an ancient 10.3m. high Buddha Statue in giving blessing posture[above]originally brought from the Northern Province of Phitsanulok.The other Luang Phor Dusit was a sitting Buddha Image in the so-called "SUBDUING MARA" posture brought from the now defunct Dusit monastery in Bangkok.
HOR TRAI[The Monastery Library]is situated in Section 10 of the monks living Quarters.It has served as the main storeroom for the TRIPITAKA or the Buddhist Scriptures and other manuscripts containing the Buddha's teachings.Originally,the HOR TRAI was built in the middle of a pond-a traditional effective method to protect the sacred and valuable religious books from termites.however,the pond was later filled with cement.The upper wooden structure of the Library Hall can be dated back to the reign of King Rama1.
